The CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing provides an excellent start point for your career in fitness instruction and is widely respected by employers throughout the UK, Ireland and abroad as the entry level qualification for professional fitness instructors.

Pre requisite and target candidates
There is no pre requisite for the Level 2 course.  This is an ideal course for individuals (18+) wishing to gain a Level 2 vocational qualification as a gym instructor, individuals currently working as fitness instructors who have few or no relevant qualifications and individuals who wish to change careers and gain a recognised qualification.  Candidates age 16+ are eligible for assessment.

This new (September 2010) CYQ format is approved by the Qualifications and Credits Framework (QCF), and accredited by REPs.  The course comprises of six units:

Mandatory Units
01      Anatomy and physiology for exercise
02      Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
03      Principle of exercise, fitness and health
04      Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity

Optional Units (either)

06      Instructing gym based exercise
05      Planning exercise to music

06      Instructing exercise for physically active children

Units 01 to 04 are mandatory.  Units 05 and 06 are optional and contextualise the qualification achieved.

The course is delivered over seven ‘contact learning’ days.  Pre course reading and home study are not essential as the course is designed to cover every aspect of the syllabus in detail.  The first two and a half days are classroom based and exclusively devoted to Unit 01 theory.  Online learning is available for Unit 01 as an alternative to attending the ‘tutor led’ sessions.  The remaining four and a half days cover Unit 02 to Unit 6 (Units 5 & 6 in the context of your choice).  All students study Unit 01 together and then split into Gym, ETM or Children's Fitness groups for the practical modules.  Gym, ETM and Children's Fitness group sessions are delivered by separate tutors.
